Women's hoops impressive in win over FSU

Women's hoops impressive in win over FSU: Thanks to the men’s game going into double-overtime, the Wayne State women’s basketball team’s game against the Ferris State Bulldogs was delayed by over 30 minutes. But that didn’t stop Talisha Bridges from pouring in a career-high 31 points to help lead the Warriors to an 81-68 road victory.

WSU is now in sole possession of second place in the GLIAC North Division as the win placed it a half-game ahead of the Bulldogs in the standings. The Warriors improved to 11-5 overall, 9-3 in GLIAC play, while the Bulldogs dropped to 10-6 overall and 9-4 in league play.

Imari Redfield scored the first five points of the game and the Warriors held a double-digit lead, 12-2, just three minutes into the contest.

WSU maintained a double-digit lead for most of the first half until the Bulldogs cut the deficit to four points at 29-25 at the 3:56 mark. The margin remained four points until a 7-2 by the Warriors to close out the first half made it a 38-29 game.

They padded their lead to open up the second half and a pair of three-pointers from Redfield gave WSU its largest lead of the game at 49-34.

FSU responded with a 7-0 run to make it a single-digit game, but the Warriors pushed their lead to 13 points, 54-41, at the 11:13 mark. They held on to the 13-point advantage at 57-44, but an 11-5 Bulldog run made it a four-point game at 59-55 with 7:32 to go.

Two minutes later, four consecutive FSU free-throws got the Bulldogs to within three points, 65-62.

But that was as close as FSU would get as the Warriors outscored the Bulldogs 16-6 over the final five minutes to come away with the victory.

Bridges grabbed eight rebounds to go along with her 31 points. Redfield also tallied a career-high with 13 points while grabbing five rebounds. Stephanie Lock paced the WSU bench, which scored 25 points, with nine points and four rebounds.

The Warriors are back at home Jan. 26 for a 3 p.m. contest with the Grand Valley State Lakers.
