Defending GLIAC champion Hillsdale visit WSU

Defending GLIAC champion Hillsdale visit WSU: The Wayne State football team improved to 3-1 overall and in the GLIAC with a 21-11 victory on the road at Northwood University on Sept. 29. The Warriors return home this week for a matchup with the defending GLIAC champion Hillsdale College Chargers.

The Chargers (4-1 overall, 4-0 GLIAC) have won four consecutive games after a 30-22 season-opening loss to California University of Pennsylvania.

The 19th-ranked Warriors are on a winning streak as well, having won three in a row after losing to Ashland in the season opener.

WSU was won four out of the last six meetings with Hillsdale, including the last two, which have been decided by a total of eight points, according towsuathletics.com.

This game will be a clash between arguably the GLIAC’s two best defenses, as the Warriors and Chargers come into the game with the top scoring and total defenses in the conference.

WSU features the top-ranked scoring defense, allowing opponents to score only 15.8 points per game. Hillsdale is tied with Ashland for No. 2, with both defenses allowing 16 ppg.

The Chargers defense is ahead of the Warriors in total defense. They are giving up merely 262.4 yards per game, which is good for first in the conference and eighth nationally. Right behind them are the Warriors at No. 2 in the GLIAC, allowing 280.5 ypg, which is 13th in the nation.

Hillsdale features the fourth highest scoring offense in the GLIAC with a 38.8 ppg average. The Chargers are averaging 440 ypg, 195.4 on the ground and 244.6 through the air.

The Warriors’ offense, which was shutout in the opener, is averaging 23.5 ppg and 314.5 ypg. It is led by the run game, which is rushing for 156 ypg, while the pass game is gaining 158.5 ypg.

“Hillsdale is a really smart team,” Warriors head coach Paul Winters said last week after the Northwood victory. “They don’t make a lot of mistakes so [we] have to be sound. They’re a good football team.”

Kickoff is set for noon at Tom Adams Field.
